An alternative for Gillette Fusion or Mach 3

Hi all,

I was pricing 4/5 blades for my battery powered Gillette Fusion and they where all around £8.00...

I don't need battery power..........never.........used it once or I don't need the inflated costs. I shave virtually everyday so a decent 2 or 3 blade razor/blade combination would be fine. I Don't care for the premium "Gillette" name.

Is there a cheapish razor/blades set that would do the job OK, maybe a Tesco or Asda branded one etc........?

Thanks in advanced for the advice.......every penny counts

Have a interesting read, much as I thought, we are getting ripped off. They may be good but 1000's percent mark-ups is plain greed. For me its the Tesco Matrix Triple and just shave a bit slower and more carefully to stop the need for a face full of 1" square piece of toilet paper bandages......LOL

    Those links are 2009?

Aldi do one that's as good but I can't remember what it's called. I think a 10-pack of blades is about £3.

Im a member of quite a few shaving forums so can help quite a bit.

Does it have to be a cart razor, if so have a look on ebay for the gillette guard razor. They come from india but for £6 you get two razors and 16 blades, each is meant to be good for 5-6 shaves.

Don't be fooled by it having one blade, trust me it'll get the job done very well.

If if you are willing, you can look into shaving with a double edge razor like i do, there has been a big comeback for this partly because of price, but also as it offers a better shave once you find a razor and blade that works for you.

A double edge razor uses blades that you put into the razor. You unscrew the top, place the blade in and screw it back down. Obviously you need to be careful first time around, but it's easy and most razors are quite gentle.

Then there's shaving soaps and creams, which again are better and work out cheaper, but for most you'll need a brush preferably badger to whip up a creamy lather. Sounds like hassle but honestly it's worth it.

If you want to know anything else just fire away. :)
    MACH3 CARTRIDGE YEARLY COST
    Typical cost for twelve cartridges is £11.99 – (£11.99 divided by 12 weeks of shaving x 52 weeks a year = £51.96 for a year’s worth of Mach3 cartridges.)
    DOUBLE EDGED BLADE YEARLY COST
At the Shaving Shack, we do 30 blades for £5.99 (15 weeks shaving at two blades a week). So: £5.99 divided by 15 weeks of shaving x 52 weeks a year = £20.76 for a year’s worth of double edged razor blades.
That’s a saving of around £31 a year and less than half the cost of shaving with Mach3s.

Btw the above quote is a bit inaccurate a blade lasts me two weeks when i shave every other day, obviously this can vary. Plus when you buy blades in bulk, they can be had for a sight cheaper. I can buy 100 for £10 that's roughly two years supply for me.

I have been using King of shaves for a few years now & find them great. Each blade lasts me about 30 days shaving every day & gives a close shave for most of these days. I used to use mach 3 before this & only got about a week out of each blade & it never shaved as close as the KOS blade.

KOS have a new blade out Azor 5, with 5 blades which I have not tried yet, I will give it a try when my current stock runs out ( I buy loads when on offer).

I also use KOS shaving oil, which is great. It is only a small bottle but I get about 3mths shaving from one bottle & it costs less than £3, so good value, it also helps the razor glide over your face with no cuts or nicks.

I tried the KOS razor when it came out, cut my face a couple of times and just wasn't as good as the fusion blades

Unfortunately, the fusion power is the best I've tried. Not that I've tried that many different types. I am thinking of trying the fusion manual ones with the power handle to see if that's as good

I really like my wilkinson sword razor:

    http://www.boots.com/en/Wilkinson-Sword-Classic-Double-Edge-Razor_29697/

It's cheap, but the product is solid enough, I don't see it breaking because it's not flimsy, and it shaves really well too if you use good blades. I spend about £8 on 100 blades and that lasts ages.

One important difference is the blades, because unlike cartridges which remain in the plastic, out of the safety razor these blades are much less safe. Handling is fine if you're careful, but the disposal needs to be more careful than cartridges. I keep a jam jar in the bathroom cupboard and throw it out with the cap on when full to avoid placing anything sharp loose in the rubbish.
