I would have thought the bills should be proportionate to wages earned. Married or co-habiting, either way you're in a relationship and your combined incomes are keeping the 'ship afloat', although I appreciate it is very difficult to look at things that way when you're not married (and sometimes even when you are!).

Otherwise you run the risk of ending up with one person struggling and suffering. Perhaps one partner can afford to go out and blow some cash on enjoying a night out and the other one can't. Over time it can create resentment and a gulf between them which ends up affecting the relationship. Sometimes it creates debt as the lesser wage earner struggles to keep up with the pace.

It may be that you don't have to have anything as formal as an agreement. Perhaps your other half can put money aside for holidays and fun stuff for both of you. Or pick up some extra bills as they arise during the year?

Discuss it with him, I think honeypop pretty much covers all the options. If you decide to stick with the 50/50 split then tell him that you need a lifestyle (and rent) that takes into account that fact that you have less money than him.
