I will say better to call them, as they could tell you straight forward whether you qualify or not and open it straight away. They might have some discretion and also you have nothing to loose ....

They have no discretion, its a computer decision, it doesn't give the option to upgrade to Zero unless the conditions are met.

If you have no savings over 10k or no investment with isa managers, or no mortgage with santander, then you'll not be able to get it.

    Here is the eligibility criteria
    http://products.santander.co.uk/bankaccounts/zerocurrentaccount.html

I do not think mortgages in other banks are relevant or applicable in this instance.

Customers who hold a mortgage / savings / investments products with Santander, Can apply for a new Zero Current Account in the following ways, providing the eligibility criteria is met†:
    • if you hold a Santander mortgage or investment you can apply online today
    • if you hold a Santander savings account (over £10,000 which has been held for a minimum of 3 months) or an Alliance & Leicester mortgage you can apply by calling 0800 707 6692 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 0800 707 6692 end_of_the_skype_highlighting begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 0800 707 6692 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 0800 707 6692 end_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting between 8am and 9pm Monday to Friday, Saturday from 8am to 4pm, or go into your local branch

Existing Santander current account holders who use their existing Santander current account as their main account and:
    • have paid in at least £1,000 each month for the last three months;
    • have at least 2 direct debits or standing orders set up on their account; and
    • hold a mortgage / savings / investment product with us (and meet the eligibility criteria†)
    Can apply to upgrade to a Zero Current Account by calling 0800 707 6692 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 0800 707 6692 end_of_the_skype_highlighting begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 0800 707 6692 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 0800 707 6692 end_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting between 8am and 9pm Monday to Friday, Saturday from 8am to 4pm, or go into your local branch.

Not eligible for Zero? If you don’t meet the eligibility criteria why not consider our Preferred Current Account – it pays 5% AER (fixed for 12 months) on balances up to £2,500 when you pay in £1,000 each month. You will also get £100 cashback if you switch to us. Click here to see our Preferred Current Account.

Sorry I should have been clearer, Only Santander products are eligible for the criteria.

Your mortgage elsewhere doesn't count. Nor do you savings etc.

Sorry it seems you don't qualify.

I would recommend a combination of a caxtonfx and a Kalixa prepaid card for spending abroad. The kalixa offers the same free forex as santander zerocredit card on purchases.

And the caxton offers free atm withdrawals but a slightly lower rate, so if your in Europe or US you can benefit from this.

There is a fee for atm usage but as long as you just use it for purchases you'll get the same benefit of it.

Also if you apply through quidco there is £8 cashback.
