Royal Mail - Airmail sent via surface

Hi,
I have family in New Zealand and from time to time we send them stuff via Royal Mail.
On two ocasions now we have paid for Airmail and the stuff has obviously been sent via surface mail. The first was when my first grandchild was born and we sent out a cot blanket via airmail. It took 3 months to arrive. Afterwards I sent in all the complaint documents to Royal Mail and they haven't done a thing - and of course I no longer have the originals! One of the difficulties of all this that you have little access to hard evidence about what has happened - only its results.
In early May my second grandchild was born and we duly sent out a couple of things via airmail which have not yet arrived so we think they are going via surface again.
Is there any comeback against Royal mail? They seem to be a particularly slippery and untrustworthy organisation that doesn't want to deal with its short comings. This is obvious when you try to follow through the complaints side of their website. It has been cunningly constructed to prevent you achieving anything by sending you round and round in intricate circles without actually giving you information to help you make a complaint.
Any help/advice would be appreciated.

delivery times are not guaranteed
you are telling them that 2 letters amongst millions have been delayed
theres little RM CS can or will do
if you contated them about 2 UK items it would be the same
I cant really give advce on how the system works with segregating letters for surface/air, but I would hav thought most items were heading for air and that would be where they would go0
