Tomtom Sat Nav Problem

Connecting my Tomtom 720 Go sat nav to my computer to update it & I get a message on the computer USB device not recognised !!!
Tried everything to get it to recognise the sat nav but no will do.
Anybody any ideas whats up ?????????
