can they get any money back?

A friend booked a holiday and flight but unfortunately they couldn't go as her mum who was suffering cancer took a turn for the worse and then died. She has been told that as they knew she had cancer when they booked they can't get anything back. As you can appreciate her mum was not incapacitated by the cancer at the time of booking and has deteriorated much faster than anticipated, and they would obviously not have booked had they known what was to happen. At the moment they don't feel able to pursue this due to grief but I just wondered if ther was anything they could do -even a portion of the money back would be a bonus.

It's unlikely that they will get anything back from insurance, but they may well be able to reclaim some or all of the taxes and fees part of the total fare.
They should contact the airline concerned and explain why they didn't use the ticket and ask about the partial refund. Some airlines charge an administration fee for refunding these fees, some of which are so high it's not worth claiming, but other airlines only charge a nominal amount.
