Argos - credit voucher or cash??

I bought a portable dvd player for my son in March when it was in the sale. We opened it on his birthday at the w/e, and it was broken- won't play any discs.
Took it back to Argos with my reciept (couldn't exchange as they no longer sell it) and they agreed to refund. However. I no longer have the mastercard I paid with so they would only give me a credit voucher. Is this correct? I thought if the goods were faulty you were entitled to a cash refund as part of statutory rights.
The manager told me I was wrong and I could only have the credit voucher.
Any help would be appreciated.

I am sure the card is still on the banks system for up to 1 year, So any refunds to cancelled cards are entered manually when the request comes through.
Think they gave you a credit voucher rather than cash is to prevent fraud. Alot of companies do that.0 -
If you pay by card then a refund should go back to the card to prevent Money Launderings...0

Thanks for the responses. I understand that they would want to refund to the card, but I closed my mastercard account and switched to a visa card for my olympic application (not that i got any lol!). So they couldn't refund to that account as I no longer have it.
Presumably then from your responses they are right just to give me a credit voucher?0
