ScottishPower Meter Set-Up! Can i Switch?

When i was chatting to a Scottish Power rep recently i'm sure they told me that i cant switch energy suppliers whilst i have an economy 2000 meter in place. Something to do with 2 supplies coming into my house. Is this correct? Does anyone know why another energy company cannot provide my electricity in this case?

A quick google tells me Economy 2000 provides 18 hours of cheap(er) rate electricity, used for an electric 'combi boiler' type wet central heating system.

Dependant on the area you live in there may be no alternative supplier who will support the tariff. The only way to find out is by ringing around and asking the other suppliers, it's Economy 18 you'll be looking for, but will no doubt have some exotic sounding name.

What area do you live in....there may be someone on the forum who will have the answer and save you a bit of time and money in phone calls.

I no longer have that heating system. I have an Air Source Heat Pump but a rep told me as things stand i cant switch because of the set up i have. I'm currently waiting for my meter to be changed but it seems to be taking forever.

I'm wondering why it cant be taken over just now as i would like more options when using a comparison website with the recent price hikes.

As you say, I was hoping someone from the forum could explain as the reps at the call centre don't know too much about it.

    Regards

Don't even attempt to switch supplier with that type of existing tariff.

It is not supported by other suppliers, and attempts to switch invariably end in tears.

Get expert advice (not from some phone jockey at a supplier) as to your appliances and installation should you wish to investigate matters further.

Edit: Just saw your last post that suggests you took out the heating that used that tariff - I suggest you go back to that specialist and discuss matters with them. I'm surprised they didn't discuss this when they sold you a revised heating system originally.

    Economy 2000

This tariff is intended for medium capacity storage boilers
providing space heating or both space and water heating.
Electricity for all other purposes must be taken on Domestic
tariff and a combined Daily Service Charge applies. The
Economy 2000 supply is made available for periods at
ScottishPower’s discretion totalling 18 hours per day, but
with the proviso that no interruption will exceed 2 hours. It
is important, therefore, that the boiler stores sufficient
energy to supply space (and possibly water) heating
requirements for 2 hours. Direct acting boilers without
storage capacity are not permitted to make use of Economy 2000.

    Hi,

Bit of a story with this actually. When i moved in (it's rented) we had storage heaters. A previous occupant had the heating changed and never contacted SP. When i noticed the storage heaters were drawing electricity at peculiar times rather than the normal through the night charge i contacted a rep who came out and explained that i had the wrong meter in place and that he would have someone come out and replace the meter.

Three months later and a different heating system in place i'm still waiting for a new meter and with the recent hikes i was wondering why my current set up can not be switched to a different energy firm.

Also for some reason i cannot register to control my set up from online.

I don't even know if i will switch supplier....... even if i could.

How much are you paying per day and night rate units and what times do they switch over?

It doesn't appear to be that type of supply; it appears to be a dual metered supply (which is partly why other suppliers won't take it - they can't handle two MPANs)

There appears to be one supply for lighting, appliances etc (available 24 hours a day), and another only for heating (including possibly hot water) - that's available 18 hours a day, but with no break in supply exceeding 2 hours. There is no switching over.

    You are correct mate.

I'm assuming after SP change my meter i will be free to switch?

As far as i am aware there are only three companies that can handle Economy 18 meters (such as this). They are Scottish Power, EON and NPOWER
