My Tescocars buying experience

  • I doubt this is a lease car but rather ex Motability stock.

At the end of the day, you can cause Tesco a whole load more problems than you can some back street guy or even someone like Cargiant. If they sell you a duffer, you get it on TV and in the papers and bang goes millions of pounds of goodwill and advertising budget.
  • Why can't you see photos of the actual car they are trying to sell you ?

Just had a quick look at their site.

My perception of it is as any other Tesco product / store. Implication around cheapness but the reality is that you can buy cheaper elsewhere from local independents without much trouble, and destroying small businesses in the process.

No doubt the masses with flock to tescocars in their droves....

    Indeed.

I see how all the sheep flock to these massive supermarkets with promises of cheap prices that they dont deliver on and leaving our towns in tatters once local businesses are squeezed out.

One very simple impact is that every £ that goes to Tesco is a £ that is removed from our local economies as it goes to feed this massive corporation, with the only benefit being they create 'minimum wage' jobs. Great. They're effectively sucking our communities dry. But people dont see that.

I'm not sure many of us see the staff at our local car dealerships as being folk we want to support and look after.... we all know too many problem stories from their clients.

If Tesco do cut out the main dealerships, who have historically been the channel of 'fairly new ex-lease cars' back to drivers: then the whole car market could change - cold increase competition and bring down the cost to us of buying used cars... sounds like a good outcome.
No one seems to complain that eBay has killed the market for local 2nd-hand shops: as we all benefit from buying cheaper.

A lot of dealerships are privately owned, and employ a lot of local, skilled people - sales, admin, finance, mechanics, valets, etc. Tescos will simply centralise whatever they can to some big call centre somewhere and have a lot of dumbed down 'admin' roles. They will also suck all that money out of the local community and back into their corporate bank accounts.

You mean in the same way that 'supermarkets' were supposed to bring down prices? Now that they have predominantly killed off our corner shops and a lot of small businesses around towns with massive initial price cuts, can you really say prices are really any lower than small privateers could and do provide?

A lot of people complain about what eBay has done. For example, a lot of people - quite rightly - sell off the unwanted stuff rather than previously taking it to charity shops. And are you really paying less for second hand items, when you are bidding against people from all over the country / world?

I think people need to be careful what they wish for - in case they get it.

All the 'test drive' videos seem the same, about 30 seconds long with an RAC guy sat in the drivers seat saying the vehicle reg and then saying 'I can confirm I find no defects to Tesco Standards, this is the end of the test drive for vehicle reg XX09SSS'

I dealt with this company when it known as Carsite, in summer 2010. My experience was pretty good, broadly similar to the OP. I paid about £1,500 less than I would have at a dealer. I had one advantage in that Carsite were based in Bedford, about 25 miles from where I live so I was able to visit their depot (on an airfield!) and view the car first (although I couldn't test drive it) and at least make sure the business set-up seemed legit. The car was eventually delivered to me on the agreed date (actually, a day or two early if I recall correctly). The delivery charge was £69 though, compared to £149 now (delivery was free if you lived within the M25, I think).

Not going to use them this year though (need to upgrade car as new baby on the way) because a) they don't have the sort of stock for the car I want and b) they don't do part exchange.
