My two go to a primary that is about a 40 minute walk away - if they went to the nearest one then it would be two minutes walk, but they go to the nearest welsh medium school. I drive them there, drop them off and then go straight to work - they're in breakfast club by 7.45am so even if I wasn't working, walking there in the morning would be pretty unrealistic! I have, however, walked to pick them up when I haven't been in work.

When they go up to comp it's only a five minute walk from here, so that's what they'll be doing! Luckily the welsh comp is the closest one to our house.

And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end
  • I live in an area where the secondary school results are not brilliant.
In the adjacent county, schools are better, and there is the grammar school system.

Many of the children catch busses at around 07.30 and arriving back around 5pm.
The journey taking about 50 to 60 minutes for 25 miles.

My daughter from year from year 7 decided to go the independant school option, and takes a 30 minute train journey at 7.30 am and catches a bus for the final part of her journey.

The agreement I made with my daughter, was that if she wanted to attend this particular school, was that she didn't moan or complain about getting up early. 4 years down the line, it's never been the case :)

As a parent, you just have to make the best informed decision that you can.

It was a 15 min walk for my two, but I used to pass their school on way to mine, so would drop them off in the morning. They would walk home in the afternoon.

When we moved, and I started work at the same school a year later, they didn't want to know me. ;) 10 mins walk each way.

Very much appreciate all your replies, thank you. It helps add some perspective.

I think I've not fully appreciated just how good our present situation is and have been shocked at what seems to pretty much be the norm elsewhere. I guess we will just have to get our organised heads on and prepare for longer travel.

this might be a daft question but as you are moving anyway can you not just move close to a school?

I bet in the highlands there are some massive commutes to secondary schools involving buses boats and horse drawn carts (I jest).

It is a 1 1/2 mile walk to school for my eldest 3. We walk everyday because the buses are rubbish! It is a mixture of very busy roads and quiet roads, sometimes my 9 year old walks half way with me and then waits for his friend and walks the rest of the way with her.

Then from school it is another mile to playschool, my poor 3 year old must be knackered by the time he gets there lol.

My oldest is starting High School in August, it is our catchement school, and is an eighteen minute walk (no I am not anal at all lol), and at one point he has to cross a busy dual carriageway (there is a Pelican crossing there), and two very busy but normal trunk roads. Other children live even further away than us, and would have about 30minutes' walk to get there, maybe a bit more.

We're trying but there's just nothing available for rent in the 'right' areas.
