completing what do you do about notifying utilities

I am completing on a property shortly and as a FTB am unsure about what happens about notifying the utility companies, do i wait until i move in then notify them or can i tell them beforehand? Also do i have to stick with the utility companies the vendors use or can i choose which ones to use?

Read meters when you move out and move in.

    Choose new supplier.

Call both suppliers - get final bill and get new account.

    Sorted.

The Property Information Form which the seller completed should contain details of the company(ies) supplying water / elec / gas at the place you're buying.

You're stuck with the water, but can change the fuel provider. When you move in, take a note (and photo if possible) of the meter readings of all meters, including water if there is one. Keep that note safe.

Contact the supplier either just before or just after you move in (I did it after I moved in). You'll be on their standard rate without a tie-in, so you can find a new supplier as soon as you want. It will take about 6 weeks to transfer to the new supplier.

I would agree with the above except for the technical point that when you move in to a property for both gas and electricity you are on a so called 'deemed contract' which does have a 28 day tie in.

Thanks for that update, DVS. I knew about the deemed contract but not the 28 days (it took me far longer than that to get organised so it never cropped up!).

Great, thanks, so if i contact the current supplier (i did get a record of who that is in the legal paperwork) and tell them that i have just moved in and give them a meter reading, then contact my prefered supplier and tell them i want them to take over the supplying everything should be fine??
