Someone accessed my Natwest online banking...

A few weeks back I noticed that £5 had been deposited into my bank account, thought it was a bit strange so kept an eye on the account. That evening I tried to log onto my online banking and my password was asking for too many characters, suggesting the password was longer than normal. Anyway I went through the process of changing the password so I could access the account, was very easy to do (which is slightly concerning) and accessed my account again. When I was there I noticed that £490 had been moved from one account to the other and that my paper billing had been switched off.

So I rand up the fraud line for natwest and she asked if I had logged in earlier that evening, which I knew I hadn't because I was out all evening and whether I had myself switched of the paper billing or transferred the money. I told her that I didn't and as a result all the cards associated with online banking had to be cancelled.

What I want to know if how did they manage to access my online banking and why would they deposit money into my account? to verify the account number and sort code? (I went into a branch and was told the money was deposited in a branch in Essex, I live in Manchester). If I was to use online banking again would they be able to do a similar thing?

I have never given my details to anyone or entered details into any sort of phising emails. So I really don't know how this happened, anyone else experienced a similar thing?
