hi all, back in april 2010 i left barclays, because i was always over my overdraft and every month i was being charged over £100 fees,i saw a free money adviser who told me to open an account wih another bank so i did,i then informed barclays to close my account.
now this year in january i had to agree to pay my dept back as they told me they would take it further so now i am paying back to barclays £20.00 a week as the dept has grown to over £800.00.what i want to know is ...can i stop these payments and can i claim money back off them thanks in advance

Hi,
Barclays like any bank would not have closed your account if it was overdrawn at the time of your closure request, or indeed charges pending which would put it overdrawn.
Your chances of claiming moneyback are zilch, unless you fabricate a closure story, i.e. branch said it would be closed, and register a complaint and good luck
if the many thousands can claim for pretend ppi mis-sells then i am sure you stand a chance0 -
You might have informed Barclays to close the account but they wouldn't have done while it was still overdrawn.
You can stop the payments if you choose but then they are likely to default you and possible take you to court.
On what basis are you thinking of claiming them back? The only thing that seems to having any success at the moment is financial hardship claims but I would think the fact that you haven't used the account in over a year might go against you. Have a look at the sticky though for further information.0 -
I was in a similiar position with Barclays a few years ago. I went over the o/d limit with charges so changed accounts as i couldn't afford for them to take my salary. I wrote to Barclays with a repayment offer and asked them to cease adding interest etc which they refused to do. In the end i complained to FOS and said they were making it impossible for me to ever repay the debt. As banks are supposed to act reasonably and in light of the fact that i'd kept my payment arrangement up, they agreed to freeze the figure. Hope that helps. One step at a time0
