Return of faulty item

I had to return an item which was deemed faulty by both the UK and European support departments of the manufacturer. The fault was clear cut and reported to the supplier within days.
Should I have had to pay the return carriage? Am I likely to get it refunded if the supplier agrees with the Manufacturer?
