Which Pet Insurance

I have just completed the first year of pet insurance for my dog with Argos Pet Insurance. The renewal has come in at £40 extra compared to last year. Any suggestions for any other companies to have a look at?

AXA are widely considered to be the best as they are 'for life', the pot of money renews each and every year. Have you seen the vet for any complaint at all since you have been with Argos? The problem with switching is that any existing conditions with be excluded, for example a tummy upset often means all digestive complaints are not insurable even if they are not related to the tummy upset!

There is a long running insurance thread on the stickies, have you read through it (a few pages at the start and end, not the whole thing :p)? DO NOT USE E&L, they are a nightmare.

Hi, I haven't seen the vet for anything other than a booster injection. The argos cover seemed a good deal

Argos is OK but I *think* only their highest level of cover is/ was 'for life'. You should be safe to switch but aim not to do so again; pet insurance is the only thing I didn't shop around for as it's not organised like car or home insurance at all. Pet Plan is a very good level of cover, but they expect you to pay a percentage of the bill (instead of an excess) when the pet is older, this can run to hundreds or thousands in chronic conditions. :(

I'm with axa and wish I wasn't. They are terrible at paying out it took over three months for them to pay out the first time I claimed, the second time wasn't much quicker and they only paid out half of it, I called them to ask why and they said it was a new claim, one claim was for kidney failure the other was for renal failure, I pointed out it was the same thing and they said they would deal with it, that was over three weeks ago and I'm still waiting. I'm now sending in another claim as my wee dog was pts last week and I'm going to put a very strongly worded letter with it. I'm not the only one who's had these problems with axa I know of quite a few others.

Good pet insurance isn't cheap unfortunatley.

Check before you buy for life cover, and amount per condition per year.

Percentage excesses are a pain, but I know of at least one 80kg dog, who's monthly meds are about the £900 mark, let alone regular vet & referral appts, blood tests etc etc - he would have been pts long before now were it not for the fact he was on pet plans highest level of cover. He is now geriatric, and his owners pay an excess (not sure how much - around the £80 mark per condition - thankfully only 2 conditions) per year, and 20% of his ongoing costs.
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

    Hi,
Our dog is insured with John Lewis. Less than £15 a month when Petplan wanted nearly £40.
Have had to claim and no problems.
