Income Protection - what's covered

Hi
I am currently at risk and waiting for my "interview" to determine whether I will have a job.
In preparation for the worst case I have contacted my income protection insurance company to get some advice on scenarios and what they will need in the event of claim.
I have 90% of my income protected but the policy stipulates that I breakdown my commitments with supporting evidence, within the overall level of cover, rather than simply a cash payout.
Under the policy there are two headings "other" and "other provable" - There were no details within the policy schedule which stated specifically what these could include. I took some legal advice and was told that these headings should make allowances for things such as food and car fuel which will vary from month to month but can be proven within the terms of the policy.
The insurance company has today sent through their definitive list (not previously offered) and have stated that food and car fuel cannot be included under "other provable" meaning that these items are limited to 5% of the overall claim value under "other"
Essentially whilst I have covered 90% of my income with the policy, I am now unable to cover all of my outgoings (which is less than 90% of my income) as a result of the claim requirements.
I was wondering if this is standard practice - I feel a bit short changed given that the policy is "lifestyle protection"
Any thoughts welcomed....
Thanks
