CPP took money off a card I cancelled 6 years ago

CPP are causing me a nightmare at present, I cancelled there cover backi in January on the phone & in writing . Never heard anything more from them.
The 3 days ago I get a warning of default being posted against my credit score.
I rang the card provider who was posting the defaults to find out why a perfectly good account was being reported to be in default.
They could not work it out, until they found the defaults were being posted on an account which had been cancelled in 2005 !!!!!
CPP had just debited £89.99 from a defunct credit card in march 2011 ! How the hell is that allowed ??
I have had no statements from this card as it was cancelled in 2005 & I moved house in 2006 so there would be no reason to advise a credit card company of any form of address change.
The credit card company have refunded all the late payment fees & charges , we have had to get CPP to refund the card Which was a fight.
We are now left with a fight to get the credit history rectified !
Very very angry So be warned.

This (continuous credit card authorities) is an outrageous abuse that should be looked into by the government.
Unlike a direct debit where you can cancel at any time if you set up a continuous authority on a credit card the company concerned can debit the card at any time.
It doesn't matter if you have told the bank that you no longer deal with them, closed the account or cancelled the card. The bank will still honour the new charge and it's up to you to dispute it every time it happens.
(I personally think the banks insistence that they cannot stop the payment even when the card has been long cancelled is disingenuous. I don't for one minute believe that they would pay out on a card where the owner was deceased and they would have to shoulder the cost themselves.)There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
Bump!
Doesn't anyone have anything to add?
I think this is a disgraceful state of affairs but if everyone is as apathetic as the people here I suppose it's unsurprising that no government has done anything to tackle it.There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
I'm not apathetic! I just only post when I should be working so I've only just seen this
I too, have posted a number of times about CPA - I think it's appalling and I wish some consumer action group could raise it as a super-complaint with the OFT. This sounds like a rather odd example though... I can't quite work out what's happening..
The cover was cancelled in January... the payment taken against a credit card that expired in March 2011. Where does this 2005 account come into it? Is that what the CPP cover has been covering? If so, then the OP's been paying to cover an account for six years for no reason! That aside, the 2005 account's still a bit irrelevant; the policy was still only cancelled this year.
I'm also confused about who's placed the default notice on the file - they're the ones that should be taking it off."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
I personally believe that these credit card continuous payment authorities should be banned altogether. If you want to pay someone regularly then direct debit should be the only option.0

Cpp took the payment from a credit card account that I cancelled & closed in 2005 ....... They booked a £89.99 charge to it in march 2011
The credit card company initially said there was nothing they can do about it. The credit card company were the one defaulting against me, as this £89.99 was racking up charges for non payment. How can you pay a bill for an account closed in 2005 ????
This whole situation is ridiculous, it has to be stopped0 -
CPP is regulated by the FSA.
Register a complaint with the FSA, if enough people do CPP will be advised to stop flouting the regulations.0 -

I totally agree.
I'm still a little bit confused. You say you cancelled the cover in 2011. Does that mean you were paying (legitimately) in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010? If so, how were you paying? (Clearly not on a card that had been cancelled in 2005)."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

They took money from one of my other cards (a current one at the time BOS) in 2008 I tried cancelling then (they advised there would be no renewal after the 3 years had expired), So I just payed that bill off the card.
So letter turns up on my door step in January 2011 saying that the policy is due to renew. So I called them & insisted that I did not want to renew & I wanted the policy cancelled the woman on the other end of the phone says she had cancelled my policy. I also wrote to them the following day Insisting I wanted the policy cancelled.
Heard nothing from them since ........................
Until I started receiving warnings saying I was getting defaults posted against me, I rang the card providor & they could not understand how as my current card with them is perfect.
After looking in into it they found the CPP had posted the charge onto a closed card account that got shut in 2005. So since march it has been defaulting against my perfect credit history !:mad:0 -
God, aren't they desperate?! And frustrating. The credit card company placed the default notice and you need to be asking them to remove it. Write to them, explaining that CPP have taken money for a cancelled account (give them evidence of cancellation if you can), advise them that CPP has fully acknowledged its error and refunded the money, and ask the credit card company to remove the default notice as it was due to a mistake."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

I first had CPP policy a few years ago when I was traveling in Asia which was handy at the time.
Then 2010 was a though year for me as I lost my dad who lived abroad. So I spent most of my time in another country with my family. As I happened to be in the UK in May 2010 when my policy was due for renewal I noticed on my account that CPP charged me for 3 years as the last policy without me agreeing! They then agreed to refund me for the 2nd and 3rd year but I had to face the cost for the 1st year. I did not want the policy at all as I was not living in the country but I had no option. They obviously knew I was not happy!!!
As I am in the UK now, I wanted to call them to make sure my account was closed. To my surprise; it was NOT. They renewed my account in May this year and charged the credit card I also canceled last year.
I am so frustrated.
As mentioned above, I think it's the best to complain to FSA. How dare they can renew my policy without my approval and charge a credit card that I have canceled. They think what they do is right. It's disgraceful.
I am SO annoyed.0
