Cooker Point - expensive to put in?

We moved into our new home and found that there is no cooker point. The previous owners took their cooker / over which was freestanding and it looks like they had a Gas cooker and oven.

I am being told that getting a cooker point installed for an electric oven costs a lot as it needs its own fuse box and a cable to be run from the mains. Is that the case? How much do these things cost?

Will it be cheaper to buy a gas oven instead?

Any help / suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.
The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.

You dont necessarily have to have a cooker point.

Lots of cookers nowadays work on just 3 point plug.
Ive had one for years with no problem.

Saves a lot in labour cost for an electrican to fit it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Not too expensive at all. The Cooker needs it's own feed that is seperate from the consumer feed. This does not require it's own fusebox, but simply its own fuse (or more ideally its own MCB/RCD in a consumer unit). The size of cable to use depends upon the Cooker wattage and the distance from the Consumer unit.

    Typically;

Up to 12kW cooker needs a 30 amp MCB, at a distance of no more than 20-30 metres. Cable used should be minimum 10mm2.

At higher wattages, the cable and fuse must also be increased in size!

Additionally, the supply cable is connected to a double-pole isolating switch which is the cooker control unit situated on a kitchen wall.

The laying of the cable will require flooring to be lifted etc. However, it's a relatively straight-forward job and shouldn't take too long to do by a competent electrician.

Do you need a cooker (which is a hob and oven combined) and generally free standing, or an oven only? From what you've said I think it's the former, so it's only possible to get an oven on a 13A plug (assuming there's one nearby). The hob could then be gas but if electric you'll need a new supply cable. The cost of this will depend on lots of things including the distance from your fuse board. Any all electric cooker will require the same. Best to get a price from an electrician before you buy anything!

If you're looking to save money, a gas one will definitely be cheaper to install

We have always had a gas hobs and electric oven. And that's what I thought I could have here as well. Will that work with just a plug point or will need a separate fuse for it?

I would hope it comes with the rest of the plug too, not just the top :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

ISTR The cable will cost about £2-3 metre, the consumer unit bits about £20, the cooker point & switch about a tenner (all "ish").
What will cost the most is the electrician to fit it all for the OP.
