What have I missed?

We exchange contracts on our first home tomorrow (touch wood) and completion is set for monday. I am trying to get a checklist together of things we need to organise.

We dont need to organise removals or redirect mail.

Im sure i will still have missed something, though.

Organise buildings and contents insurance.
Take metre readings of gas and electric.
Set up sky/broadband/phone line.
Inform banks, car insurance, dvla etc etc of change in address.
Tv licence
Arrange to start paying council tax (not sure how to organise this yet)

Seems very short to me.

All help appreciated.

    Cancel milk or paper deliveries?
Get spare keys back from anyone who has them?
Don't forget water meter if there is one at the new place.
Make sure you have stuff easily unpackable for the first couple of days, in particular light bulbs, underwear and toilet paper.

I looked at checklists online to try not to overlook anything.

    Good luck.
  • Don't forget HMRC for tax purposes (not sufficient to just let your employer do it!)

There are some checklists links below, but a quick google search will bring up more:

Cheers for the list and links. Most helpful.

Whats the best way to go about sorting the utilities. Take a reading of both and ringing the current suppliers to be put on the cheapest plan?
  • I wouldn't recommend that you necessarily continue with your current supplier. From the experience of my friends and family they have always found a cheaper deal by going through a broker. 9 times out of 10 your current supplier will not be the cheapest out there.

There is at least one of the sites which, when it asks you for how much you're currently paying / fuel you're using, has an option for 'Dont know' or similar. If you click on that, you can input the property details etc and it will estimate your usage for comparison purposes.

It comes with a health warning of accuracy as it is based on generalised assumptions about your lifestyle, but is a useful starting point.
