Won't start

Have just gone out to my car to do my voluntary job and my car won't start. From what I've read it's probably the starter motor as I can hear a definite clicking and it's not firing up. Lights, radio and all the rest are working fine.

I don't know what to do now, although I belong to the RAC I don't have their home start or whatever it's called service. Does anyone know what it would cost to call them out to home? I can't see anything on the website.

I have a neighbour who is usually willing to help but my car is automatic and he says he doesn't know anything about automatics even though from what I've read a starter motor is a starter motor whatever. I live in the middle of nowhere and there is no-one else I could ask. I don't have a 'regular' garage I go to, and anyway, have never before had any problem with this car. I think my only option is to ring the RAC whatever it costs unless anyone on here has an idea that I haven't thought of.

Thank you very much

Liz

Try giving the starter motor a good tap... it may free it.

Thank you, I think it's round the back and underneath the motor though I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for - despite the pictures in books and on the net I'm still not sure. The clicking is definitely coming from low down underneath, towards the back so if I can't see it I can't hit it! Thank you, will go out and look again.

What's wrong with a spanner? Can I use the handle of a screwdriver? Though as I said I don't think I can get to it anyway.

    Thanks

If you look at the starter motor there is a big fat wire coming straight from the battery, connect that to the body / engine / starter motor case with something metal and

Not really my scene autos, but if the switch thingy on the gearbox is faulty would that have the same effect? Would you even get the click? Anyways, if you do get it started and then drive to wherever, will you get it to start after again?
