Starting a Magazine Company

There are companies like Wonga or Brighthouse who sell to this demographic so they could probably advertise.

However how about selling it to cash strapped students, then when the loans come in they spend it on all sorts of things - just a thorght...

Magazines are going to be expensive as the advertisers wont pay out straight away, they will expect credit terms for 60 or 90 days so you will have to print the first so many magazines on your own which will cost 10s of thousands, and then you have to pay people to distribute it or persuade shops to put it on their counter. Where I'm from theres lots of free magz about the city but they all come and go, each one being slightly different but never succeeding. Local companies rarly pay for advertising unless you can prove results or they get it recommended by another business first.

Hi, you've had lots of good advice already, but as I'm fairly local to you, I wonder if you've seen the Prampusher's guide that is published every 3 months in Ramsgate (it's distributed free at schools and Children's Centres, I believe. I think that's a pretty simple concept, and if you find the right target group, a possible way to start in publishing?

Instead of publishing your own magazine, based on some ideas for articles, why not try writing articles for magazines that already exist?

Artists & Writers year book has contact details, and information on what type of articles many publications accept.

This is a market I've often been tempted to get into but never had the knowhow or courage. You've had some really interesting and intelligent responses but in response to your original question, you could use the Adobe creative suite to create the magazine, it is expensive though. As for the legal issues if I ever do do this, I would get professional advice because things like this can end up costing a fortune if you go wrong with copyright etc...

I use Serif Page Plus (it's about £60 for the latest version) for print layouts for books.

The future is online though - I freelance for a publishers and we do far, far more ebooks than print now. (still use pageplus for the pdf versions).

In my kids primary school, they come home with 'Families' magazine, which probably something similar.
