Renting, debt and Homelet

Hi People,

I am seeking advice about my current situation as i dont want to (but probably will anyway) throw £240 down the toilet through my LA going through Homelet to reference me.

Important points are;

- I have bad credit, I still owe £8,000ish to HSBC, £5,000 to MBNA and like £600 to natwest. Assume i have no CCJS, i stopped opening my post because it got boring.

- Ive been renting for 3 years and have never missed my rent

- I earn £40k+ a year not including commissions, my partner about £20k

- Our current LA is going to give us an excellent reference

- One of the addresses that I was referenced at 2 years ago, but have not used to reference this time around, is where my debt is. I have no idea whether they will put 2 and 2 together

None of my debt is registered at the addresses i have given them to reference, I only gave them the 3 years they asked for. My debt is registered at my mothers place (We can debate morality later)

We love this place, we are only moving because of uncontrollable mould in the property that our letting agent and landlord ignore. And we feel its bad for the health of us and our 20month old son.

I told the letting agent I may have bad credit which is marginally honest as I dont know whether they will pick it up. If I knew for certain that they would I might as well give up looking to live anywhere.

Appreciate anyone taking the time to read this and give any information in return!

Thanks!

You sound thoroughly dishonest to me.

So you have debts, so do lots of other people and they manage without having to lie to people about it.

Mould is almost always caused by lifestyle and lack of ventilation.

You are also wrong about your debts being tied to an address, they're not. You will be linked with them as soon as the information unfolds through the system.

By admission of our landlord who i spoke too when she popped over, the house has always suffered even before us, we ventilate well and keep it immaculate. The house itself is like 200 odd years old and not exactly structurally sound.

We paid for a speciallist to come over and make recommendations to prevent it, they were all ignored, as were our pleas for a de-humidifier.

I may be wrong about things, which is why I am posting here. You may disagree with how honest I am. Thats your own opinion based on only a small part of a huge story, which you are entitled to of course.

Fundamentally im trying to provide a roof over my families head.

That's fair enough, so far as it goes. However I think you could re-write your opening post because it does not give a good impression of what you are asking.

Sorry but it was long enough and I actually wanted people to read the factual points and reply, rather than think 'no !!!! thats long next post'

Im not trying to win any friends, tell my life story or portray myself as a saint.

If you (or anyone) feel there are things I can and should do differently for a constructive reason, not a moral reason. Im all ears.

    -Thanks

been in the same situation as this with homelet, similiar sort of debts, reference came back bad.

anyway LA didnt inform LL, and i still got the place. 99% LA's dont care about the actual reference just the fee.

I was made redundant and un-employed for 10 months, im sure you appreciate with the soaring cost of rip-off britain that we are still getting back on our feet, with the intention of paying people back one at a time.

There is no instant magical solution.

Get yourself over to the Debt Free Wanabee forum. You have a small debt relative to your income.

Debt goes on the person, not the address and no matter how clever and careful you think you are being, they will catch up with you. By using an ostrich principle you are making matters worse in the long run. I know being unemployed sucks and that debts often mount up in these times but you must deal with them before they take over - debt collectors will triple the original debt with fees and admin charges.

Yes bad credit might mean renting elsewhere becomes more difficult but you will find somewhere. From their point of view they will want reassurance about receiving the rent so consider how best to come to an arrangement such as rent money in advance.
