Shop expects me to take back unfixed faulty goods! What should I do?

Hi. OK, I will try to be brief...
I bought quite an expensive radio from a small independent shop & within a month it was clear that the digital clock was somehow losing time & sometimes freezing altogether. No good to wake me up in the morning! I rang shop & they agreed to take it back, they wouldn't give me a refund or replacement but said radio had to be sent back to manufacturer to be fixed. The man was fairly rude, not wanting to listen to my explaination of the items problem as customer waiting. Anyway, 10 days later I rang to see if it was back. It wasn't as the shop its self had not sent it to roberts until they'd seen for themselves that there was a fault (which they HAD).
Fast forward another 10 days, I called them yesterday and shop owner says manufacturer can find NO FAULT with it & is sending it back for me to collect!!!
So basically, am I supposed to take this back? Shop is saying Manufacturer is saying all is ok with item but both myself, on several occassions, and the seller has seen it go haywire. To add to the problem, even if I accepted that this electrical fault had miraculously corrected its self & took the radio away~if it went wrong again, I am moving out of the area & obviously sending it away to get seen to would cost a fortune. I will just have NO confidence in this product because IT IS FAULTY!
So what do i do..take it back, or not. Take to small claims court if they won't give refund? I'm pretty sure this shop is just going to say~'well roberts said theres nothing wrong with it so theres nothing we can do'.
...But heyve seen its faulty , so do you think I should suggest that if they are taking manufacturers word as gospel that they should keep that one & just give me another?! Also, I bought it if them, not Roberts!
£240 for a clock radio that the clock only works when it wants to just isnt acceptable.
Whats your advice ? Thanks
