Newbie, trying to find ways around verified by visa. Hmmmmm.

The 3DSecure feature can be disabled by merchants, it is merely an added feature for THEIR protection, not yours.

Verified by Visa is a terrible system, and I wish they would implement it properly.

It re-directs you to a web site that is not the merchant, nor your bank nor Visa itself. The site uses a lot of scripting and won't load properly if you have a script blocker on your web browser. This forces you to re-enable scripting and refresh the site, hoping that it won't screw up.

In one case, it did screw up for me, and presented me with someone else's credit card details to confirm - of course I couldn't since I didn't know their password.

The whole lot looks like an amateurish attempt at a man-in-the-middle attack on my on-line shopping.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

The thing that bugs me most about VBV is that at work, if a customer is trying to buy something from our website, they're prompted for VBV and the vast majority of people have forgotten that they've ever used it, let alone remember the password.

This means the transaction usually doesn't go through (I say usually, because some people will leave and wait to see if it did, just in case, and then I've not personally heard from them, so cannot assume) and they blame me/the shop/the website/their bank/visa but never themselves for forgetting their password, and even if they're cross with their bank, they usually blame me as I'm the nearest person to them, so it's all my fault :rotfl:.
  • Had to leave the computer just when the prompt for VBV comes up, by the time I got back (30 seconds or so) it had gone through anyway without clicking proceed.

Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCode are not the be all and end all of internet security. If somebody has your credit card details then they're far more likely to be heading to sites which don't use VbV. There will be plenty to choose from: shops based in other countries which don't use it nearly as much, shops who would rather take the hit for fraud than put off so many customers with this convoluted scheme, etc. From the fraudster's point of view, those are easier options than hoping they can get around VbV this time.

As arcon5 says, the scheme is for the retailers' benefit - not yours. It's about shifting liability for fraudulent transactions away from the retailer and on to the bank (or you). It really would not be too concerned that it can be skipped through.
This is everybody's fault but mine.

I had an issue with Opodo, part of which was that although they are a VbV institution, I was never presented with a VbV page even though my card was registered. The payment just went straight through.
  • I get re-directed to a VBV page and then straight back to the retailer to complete the purchase. I am registered with them, but for the last year I have not had to input my pw. No idea why either tbh

It's been doing that for the last six months when I make a purchase. The vbv screen appears for a few seconds then disappears with the transaction going through anyway.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.
