help with dvd drive please

ok, so i was trying to copy some photos onto a dvd and my drive kept spitting the disk out, stating there was not one in there.
Every disk i try - including windows or motherboard disk is coming up as a single file audio cd.
I have tried 2 different writers and 1 rom, and changed the ide cable in case.
Windows device manager is recognising it is there, but keep recognising it as new hardware, each time i reboot - help!
i am running windows xp if that helps.
- i was trying the windows disk as a way of formatting, but even when i boot from cd in the bios, it doesn't recognise it and just loads from hdd.

Xp doesn't support dvd writing without extra software, try imgburn if you don't have nero or the like

If you've used it before, has anything been installed since it last worked, eg itunes?

i was using both nti media and my actual photoburning software. The only thing that happened was about a week ago, it halted on the bios and wouldn't load - i cleared it with the jumper and all was well. I did not however try the dvd since then. - but i cannot get the motherboard etc disk to load to check if anythings missing!
- no new software added.

does the dvd drive show up in the bios, ie, it's set to detect that channel
