So hotels, restuarants and takeaways serving food that is patently out of date and after its USE BY is not in the interests of Environmental Health?

It depends. If someone buys an item that say "use by 17 June 2011", on 17 June 2011, but freezes it on that day. Then they defrost it on 22 June 2011 and serve it that day, what would they think about that?

Also, use by dates are recommendations, they are just the producers opinion of when the food should be consumed by. I don't know of any law that says you MUST NOT consume it after that date.

I think you should all get out a bit more into the real world that we live in.
My family life is based on the assumption that we don't interfere with anybody's way of life as long as they don't interfere with ours.
    Am I wrong then?
A point for discussion I think (or are you all too far up your own backsides?)

geordie joe, I think you actually meant 'best before' as opposed to 'use by' in your comment about recommendations.

The first entry I found on Google for 'use by dates', apart from the Daily Fail, was from Bracknell Forest Council and they say: It is a criminal offence to sell, or have on your premises exposed for sale, under the Food Labelling Regulations, any product that has gone beyond its 'use by' date. Any product passed its 'use by' date must be removed from sale.

    http://www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk/environment/env-environmental-health/env-food-and-drink/env-food-complaints/env-food-safety-best-before-dates.htm

In your own home, of course, you can keep food as long as you like before eating. But that's another story.

Various reasons why I would not consider this as greedy, especially if we are the fan of this forum:

Is it not that the main reason why we are all here in this forum, to find such deal and taking advantage of it? This is also the spirit of this MSE forum.

The reason why the shop reduce the price heavily, because they want the stuffs are getting sold as quickly as possible, to free their spaces, etc and people who are buying them in a bulk are eventually helping the shops owner to achieve this.

Apply the same principle, another case we have found, some people might buy bargain stuffs and then resell it on eBay to make profit. Are they greedy???

How could we know that other people are going to buy them within the time span where the shops are still keeping those items, if nobody buys it within some period of time, the stuffs might end up in the bin, more burden to environment …

Apart from the fact that he was very greedy and was depriving other people from getting a bargain there was the feeling that these prawns may end up in someone's takeway meal in the next few days.

Surely that would be illegal as they would then clearly be well out of date?

Some care homes / nursing homes which charge £1000 a week do this which I think is pretty shabby. Residents are not getting a discount becuase the business owner is feeding them food which while not in danger of being off (which is the use by date) is past its peak tastewise - like for example bread which on its last day of best before is always dryish ( I buy it myself for home use).
