    Hi guys

Going to finally get around to reinstalling XP on my desktop but had a couple more questions related.

I run Spybot Search & Destroy and noticed that "Teatimer.exe" often seems to be running overkill when I first boot up hence causing the machine to run so slowly.

Am now tempted to not re-install Spybot but perhaps something else instead? - Have recently installed Malware Bytes (FREE version) - is this an adequate replacement or should I keep Spybot installed.

Alternatively anything else as good as Spybot out there?

    Cheers

teatimer is just an annoyance -- u can disable it. myself, i gave up on spybot ages ago and moved instead to Mbam .
BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

    Thanks guys

I disabled Teatimer and the boot up time was much better.

I will still reinstall XP in the next few days but will prob go down the Malware Bytes route in future.

FYI my pc is a p4 2.26ghz with 1gb of ram. It has an ASRock P4i65g mobo in it so I believe it can support 2gb ram easily. I think (without looking) I have 2 x 512mb sticks.

Crucial advise me that I could get either DDR PC2700 / PC3200 but a 2gb kit will be around £60 - is this really worth doing?

Or would I be better off looking on ebay for some cheaper manufacturers memory and then flogging off the 512mb sticks?

    Cheers

mbam is the best secondary scanner out there. spybot's passive protection and startup tools are good. No harm in installing spybot and just use it for these (and some of the other tools), just not as a scanner or teatimer :)

as to the memory, DDR is getting expensive. Trawl ebay for cheaper than crucial, or how about cex? used but with 12-month warranty...

£20 for 2GB PC2100, £36 for faster inc. delivery. In all honesty, if you put 2GB in it, the RAM speed will not really be noticeable :)

I did find the "recommended" Crucial Memory on ebay for £15 a stick but as you said will I really notice a difference? (Doesn't Crucial memory have a Lifetime guarantee?)

Otherwise if I went Non Crucial I see a US seller had 2x 1gb sticks for around £15 too (I think it's compatible).

Thanks ever so much for your input :)

the yank stuff may stitch you for postage and/or customs duty......go in with your eyes open ;)

thing is, yes crucial give a lifetime warranty, but how long is the rest of the system going to last ?? Personally I'd be looking at doing it cheap as chips and if it does another couple of years, you're laughing :)

if you notice any difference between 1 and 2GB after a reinstall I'd be very surprised - check your commit charge.

If there isn't going to be much difference with installing an extra 1gb of ram I might not bother then.

    See closed's thread here - https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849 . . . again.

I think the quickest results come from using Ccleaner / tools / startup and disabling everything except anti-virus , er , you are using Avira or Avast , aren't you ? Do that , reboot and note the difference.
