Yep. First off - you don't need to use it neat. 50/50 is plenty strong enough to get limescale off shower stalls and so on, and even half of that if you're up to date.

For use around the rest of the house I use about 1/5th vinegar plus a good dollop of lemon juice which works fine and what very little smell there is disappears in five minutes flat.

You can also add a couple or three drops of an essential oil too.

Edit: If you check the Cleaning section of the MEGA Index sticky at the top of the Old Style forum look in "White vinegar" for more tips and recipe variations.

  • I find facts and figures soon stop a complaining hubby! Tell him how much it would cost to clean the house with fancy brand name products for a year, (guesstimate this figure) then how much it costs to clean a house with vinegar for a year. Then finish up with "So that's x amount to put towards ... " (insert your hubby's favorite hobby/ dream holiday/ etc.)
    "Then, when every last cent
    Of their money was spent,
    The Fix-it-Up Chappie packed up
    And he went."

Could you use some hm air freshener - a helpful MSE told me to rub some essential oil on back of radiators so that it gives off smell when heating is on - this way it works same way as expensive plug in air fresheners...

This is something you could regularly or just on the days your using vinegar?

  • Last time I went shopping I looked for some white vinegar, saw malted, chip shop style, sherry and loads of others... No white venegar though... Unless its the white wine vinegar? Where do you find this stuff? ANd does it complement stardrops, because thats what we use at the moment. If its a replacement for stardrops though I dont think I'll bother.

Vinegar removes limescale much better. I use them both for different things. Vinegar for fabric softener, windows, descaling kettle etc, stardrops for general cleaning.

It's called "white" vinegar, but is actually "distilled" vinegar and is clear like water.

It's also used more alongside stardrops than instead of. Take a look:-
