I heard that immigrants get "gifted" 4k for a car when they arrive in this country.I'm not sure how true this is but how many parents can afford a 4k car.
  • definately not just tell the truth if she says it was money she had at home it will pose loads more questions - where did it come from? how long she had? (rules only changed in April if they think she had the money before then!!) could get really messy and if she then 'comes clean' will they beleive her??
no problem with a £4,000 gift from parents regarding tax as far as I am aware and even if there is which I doubt council and Income Support will be more interested in their own benefits and not tax. (have worked in an income support office so have a bit of knowledge)

    No. No. NO!
She got herself in a state by not doing what she knew to be right, i.e. telling them about the gift, even though there are no consequences. Now you are going to suggest she lie about it.
For goodness sake is there no truth and morality left on this board?
Even if there isn’t, out of self-interest, when you’re in a hole stop digging.

I think there's plenty of tuth and morality on the board.
But your morality may not be the same as mine, and while they differ there is nothing to say that one is right and the other wrong so try not to be so patronising.
I do agree though that she shouldnt lie and should tell them the truth, that her parents gave it to her to buy a car :D
  • If her money is below the maximum allowed, why does she have to tell them anything?

Or if they ask, why should she tell them other than the truth? She's doing nothing wrong.

:rotfl: I've heard a man in a red suit with white trimmings and a bushy white beard visits the homes of all good children and leaves them presents on Xmas eve.

If you can find me one single case of an "immigrant" getting a car where a uk citizen would not, then 'll give £50 to the charity of your choice. :D

I was on income support a good few years ago, and while on it, we sold our house, so i had my share of the profits from there. I payed off all my debts, and also bought certain things, one being a new car. I had to show all my receipts to the benefits agency to show how the money was spent, but i was allowed to spend it. The only thing they didnt like, and docked my benefits £1 a week, and that was the paying off of my catalogue, as it was on buy now pay later, and the bill wasnt due for a few months they said it wasnt a necessary spend!!! The car, they agreed was.
  • I would advise that she just tell the truth. I would imagine they will ask for bank statements and receipts showing the money had been spent.

That is what I would ask for anyway(I work in benefits)
  • HIYA.. being a single mother on benefits i know about the visits they do.. i am sure it is purely to check see is the one living there .. that there is no one else living with her apart from her children.. proof of income will purely be the housing benefit letters.. income support letters and chid benefit letters..

i used to get really worried about visits when they sent me a letter letting me know they were coming.. and i have also had a couple of unannounced visits.. but honestly all they ever wanted to see were proof of benefits.. and to see i am who i said i was and no one else was living here.

tell her to relax and the person will probably be there for less than 5 mins.. if they ask to see a statement they wont have time to scour the whole thing.. they will probably only look at the balance to check its not over the £6000 limit.. they would be suspisious not to see a statement cause they will think she has something to hide..

    it will be fine ..

    bethx

  • To all of you posting with good intentions, i thank you. I also pay my taxes, therfore do not agree with people claiming unlawfully, sadly my sister as i said through no fault of her own cannot.

Some of the postings on here have broken my heart a little. Most of them have warmed my heart. For the person who suggested my parents cash gift was a lie can i advise you that the money came to them by suing and winning a claim for compensation for being abused as children in a supposed 'care home'. You got it very wrong, please dont make assumptions or jokes at the expense of causing deep upset to other mse'ers.

As for untruths and lies on this board from another poster, if my parents had a hard time and want to make a difference to her daughters life as they know she is struggling, why cant they? If this means that she is given a gift in one hand and then its taken in the other it was completely pointless from my parents point of view. Its by being honest that shes in this situation. Remember, if she was out to decieve she wouldnt have banked the cheque in the first place. She would have dealt in cash only. My parents and her are honest people and the intention was not to decieve, i just didnt want her to lose a gift that my parents had literally suffered for. Thats all.

I will tell her to be honest though and thanks again for all the genuinely helpful posts. x

I have seen immigrants get £6k given to them to get a car with !!! My car cost £600 and has to do 30 miles a day!! I get no help, no support and definitely no free money - how is this fair? I'm seriously looking to emigrate as I can't stand it any more - it's madness.

Apologies from detracting from thread but I got questioned last year how I could afford to "run" my £265 mondeo and had my finances gone through with a tooth comb when I have a special needs child as a single parent(divorced).I took offence to this as I dont smoke nor drink especially when you read the above.I go without alot to run my car.
