Actually I would like to discover the Latin name etc myself.
Is it this?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plants/plant_finder/plant_pages/143.shtml
If so, the website suggests it is only half hardy.
Have you got it in your garden and did it survive the bad winters?
RHS website says it's OK if grown against a warm wall (which I haven't got!)0 -

Thanks to you both.
Well I have far superior knowledge to the RHS then - don't forget for tens of years people in the UK thought the exotic magnolia could never be hardy in the UK
Campsis is 100% hardy down to -35C every winter as known by me for the last 15 years, thanks to the winter temperatures we get at our place in the sun.
It doesn't bat an eyelid.
UK temperatures even in the Cairngorms would not stop you growing it.
Yes - it does look rather exotic and especially grown twinned with a purple clematis looks stunning. A bit of the Mediterranean in your garden but unlike Bougainvillea will live for many years.
Very vigorous, sends out shoots etc but not really a pest.
OK word of caution not sure if the hardiness is variety specific but I doubt it, in our place abroad everybody grows the bog standard variety which is orange just like in the photos.0 -
That's the feller! :rotfl:0

Here we go
some cultivars are hardy to as low as -30°F/-34°C.

We've got loads of these and would recommend it - looks exotic, completely hardy in UK, flowers at time others fade away (end July-August), no need for special treatment & trouble-free0 -
i will have to order one on a day the ohs out as he gets a manic glaze in his eyes now when i come home with more plants each day:rotfl:***MSE...My.Special.Escape***0

The trumpet vine is very very pretty but I think it might not be right for the spot in which I'd like to put it. I might have a think as to whether there's anywhere else for me to put one though!
I'm now tempted by this rose:

As I've found reports of it blooming well even in shady spots, and it's thornless.0 -

I know what that's like!0 -
Campsis is best planted against a sunny wall - the heat will make it flower better.
On a panel fence you should consider plants that will not outgrow their space too quickly e.g. wisteria, campsis.
A panel fence cannot take too much weight before collapsing - especially after a few years of weathering.
It depends on your soil type. If it is slightly alkaline I would go for a well-behaved clematis or three (i.e. not a montana). Acid soil I would go for Trachelospermum jasminoides.
You could also strain wires from one post to the next so the panels can be replaced without disturbing the plant(s).
I would also lift all the grass between the patio and fence and plant it up You don't have to have climbers, a few shrubs would have the same effect.0
