Egg.com on my face !

 I took out a credit card with Egg years ago on line, kept on top of it for a while then forgot about it so ended up paying the minimum amount each month & am still paying it 9 years on!!I cannot believe it, I contacted Egg to check out my balance which has ony reduced by £150 IN a year, the rest of what I am paying is the interest.
There are a couple of issues I would like advice on.
When I rang Egg to get them to check my account as I wanted to know what my original balance on my account was when I originally took the card out , they said as it was so long ago they were able to do that & suggested I order statements on line and these would cost me £2 each . Is there any way I can get the to give me these statements without paying for them? They have had enought of my money !
Also I do remember in the early days of having this account that they slapped on a PP1 which I did'nt ask for, they did take it off after I noticed it.
I did'nt get a refund i dont think so as its longer then six years could I still get this refunded ?
Also I want to check out everything about the rates they have been charging me over the years to ensure that even though its my stupidity that has let it drag on for so long, that I have not been overcharged along the way.
How should I set about doing this?

It goes without saying that I need to transfer my balance, should I leave it as it is whilst I am checking everything out, or move it now?

Advice appreciated - thanks

I would ask for a SAR (subject access request) under the data protection act.
    Max fee is £10.
Not free but a lot cheaper than £2 a statement.

why does it go without saying that you need to transfer your balance?

only do that if you can get a CC with a lower APR

and of course in any event start paying a lot more than the minimum payment

If you write a "Subject Access Request" under the Data Protection Act and pay them £10 they are obliged to provide all the information they hold about you, but it will not necessarily be in the form of statements. it could just be printouts from their system, as long as it is legible and understandable. Even suggesting that you intend to go down that route might persuade them to give you what you need for a reduced cost.

A quicker and cheaper way is to pay £2 for a copy of your "statutory" credit report from one of the credit reference agencies. It should have the balances going back six years. Even cheaper is to sign up to one of their 30 day free trials but you must cancel and get confirmation otherwise you will be charged every month.

I'm not so sure about this.
I think payment information goes back 4 years.
Also the extended information (payment amount and balance) for my EGG accont on Equifax is only shown for 2011.
I think this extended information is fairly recent.

No harm in getting the reports though, although I would recommend the £2 variety rather than being given the run-around for cancellation (hanging on the phone for an hour, then they lose your isntruction and charge you anyway).
  • Sorry to add to a thread thats a few days old but hopefully this will be of some use. The form you need to request your info can be found on their website. Egg call it a DSIR, same as SAR just a different name.

It's been a long time since I worked at Egg, over 3.5 years. But, if their systems are still the same the screenshots you get given will show dates of interest rate changes, any notes made by operatives when you have called etc etc.

Also, I think it might be that when you signed up for your Egg Card that the PPI was 'opt out' and not 'opt in'. They would automatically have a blurb about PPI with a ticked box underneath, with the usual 'untick this box' to opt out etc. A lot of people never noticed it or paid much attention. However, that wasn't done for long (it stopped well before I started working for them) so there is a chance that didn't happen with you.

As it's more than 6 years ago they may not have the statements going back to when you applied. However, the screenshots of notes etc probably will go back to when the account was opened. If the system is still the same then one of the first notes re account opening will have something like PPI with either N or Y next to it to indicate whether you unticked (N) or left that box ticked (Y).

This is all from memory so I could be slightly wrong, especially if their systems have changed. Personally I would say that as it was cancelled more than 6 years ago you have no chance of making a claim, I'm no expert though.

Egg used to offer another way to get a list of transactions but I can't find any mention of it on their website now (it only has the statement option or DSIR option), so I presume they've stopped doing it. They used to charge £5 for a list of all the transactions (not in statement format). It would literally be a long list with just the transaction date, name and amount. The advantage was half the cost and it was a lot quicker, they used to send the info within a week or so.

I'm 90% sure you will get actual statements with a SAR/DSIR but it is possible they will give you that long list instead. However, it will still have all the relevant info you want.

You need to pay more than minimum payments. I have an Egg card and it clearly states in the documentation that if you pay the minimum it takes longer to repay the balance. This will be the same with every CC provider I'm sure.
