Real Wood Flooring

We are looking to lay a real wood floor in our lounge, in a rustic oak look (preferably in widths of 120mm or more). Have checked around the usual DIY shops and some websites, and the cheapest we have found is about £25 per square metre.

Does anyone know of a place that may do real wood oak flooring any cheaper?

Also, a bit of a long shot, but if there are any B&Q employees on-line, would you know if real wood floor may be going on sale in your store anytime soon?

Many thanks in anticipation for your help.

  • That's very cheap, £25. Make sure that it is solid wood and not just 'real wood' veneer. I bought mine from wickes.

Agreed - if you want quality that lasts and doesn't warp / shrink etc ....expect to pay around £40 - £50 per square metre for a solid oak floor.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

Assuming that's what you want. There's nothing wrong with flooring that has a real wood (no quotation marks - it is wood, not wood-effect laminate) veneer. Engineered/structured/composite boards like this are a cost-effective alternative to solid wood, and have several advantages over solid wood, such as a lower tendency to warping and a greater resistance to water.

I'd agree with ozkin on the price you might expect to pay. If it really is solid wood, it indicates to me that it could be lower quality, and if it's engineered wood, that it might only be a 7mm veneer (I'd recommend 14mm minimum in most areas).

Last week I bought about 14 sq m of 15mm thick finger jointed solid golden oak flooring for £14.99 per sq m. The shop had been selling it on offer at £24.99 but reduced it to clear. The lot that I bought was the last they had but they said there would be more offers (didn't know what exactly) between Christmas and New Year. The shop is called Top Floor - they sell wood, laminate and carpets. They seem to be based around the East Midlands / North (Nottingham, Leicester, Mansfield & Doncaster stores are listed on my receipt) and as far as I can tell they don't have a website.

As far as the quality goes, I'm no expert so only time will tell. I laid it down yesterday and it looks great at the moment! We're planning to move away and let out the house, so I'm trying to make it look good without spending too much...
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

Hi Raaaaa, I too have been searching for months, been round the usual DIY stores, and even topps tiles, also looked on ebay, there is a few selling on there, and also looked through the internet.
I am still undecided, as am hoping for the january sales, whether in DIY stores or on the net.
My friend got real flooring from B&Q the other month when they had a sale on, and apparently within 2 days they had sold out.
So I am keeping my eyes open everywhere lol, I do think £25 is very reasonable, as some are ridiculous prices, I am even toying with the idea of the engineered flooring, cause I need about 36 square metres, and I might have to sell my self on ebay to pay for it,:D then there is the underlay, and bits and bobs.

So if anyone hears of any sales either B&Q or anywhere else, please let me know too.

    Hi all,

many thanks for all your replies to this thread.

we ended up going for a local-ish (Carmarthen) firm to buy our flooring. we got it for about £23 p/m squared (125mm width & 18mm thick), the adhesive was £55 and delivery was £30 (we live in Cardiff).

although we haven't got it laid yet, it does look like just what we were after. will update you at the weekend after the floor is laid.

Knowing our luck, the B&Q half price real wood flooring sale will start tomorrow morning!!
  • I know it s a bit late for you, but we got ours from https://www.frenchfloors.co.uk
once laid it needed a quick sand and treating, but its been down almost 5 years now and looks better than ever.

    It might help someone else

    good luck

Raaaaa, you probably know this but the most important part of laying a wooden floor is the preparation of the sub floor. I am no expert so all I will advise you to do is carefully research the best way of getting the sub floor level etc. There will be plenty of good advice on the net.

    Good luck
