Well,I was able to recover the 90% of the data from the H/Drive & I've decided that, after reading online reports of problems with Fujitsu 2.5in drives,I'm going to buy a new one, with a larger memory.

I looked at the ones on PC World & am confused as to;
Are they all compatable
Which ones are the best
Will they all do the same job

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/components-upgrades/internal-hard-drives-715-c.html

The other issue is about re-installing my existing O'S from the back up disc's onto a new drive,as you sometimes read about problems as Windows shows it as a duff copy...

Any advice welcome,

Cheers.

You want the 2.5" SATA drives and any of those should work fine.

As far as the recovery discs go, Fuji Siemens are fine, be it XP/Vista/Windows 7 they are essentially copys of OEM discs.

fujitsu make the worst 2.5in drives i know off, but they usually are the cheapest. however their 3.5in drives are wonders, mine finally died after 9years.

2.5in drives can be eithe SATA or PATA, SATA looks like a L where are PATA has 44pins on the 2.5 / 40pins on the 3.5 (see pic). if your laptop is a new laptop in the last 3-4years then i would say its sata,
it doesnt matter who makes the 2.5in sata drive as they are all identical in the connection side.

looking at the posted website, I personally would go for the 500gb @£30 for the difference of £5 between this and the 250gb its worth getting the extra 250gb.

This Internal 2.5" SATA Hard Drive provides a massive 500GB of storage space for your portable computer, and is straightforward to install using the simple Serial ATA interface. Guaranteed to be a Samsung HM500JI/Toshiba MK5055GSX.

Would be fine if it were available for purchase.

Back up discs should be fine.

have you proved that the existing one is faulty?

reinstalling windows from the discs that came with it won't be a problem

I was able to use a programme to recover the data I wanted but whenever I bunged it into a caddy & tried to access the data that way,or reload the drivers by putting it into the laptop,it wasn't having it.
Kept getting a 'boot error image' (or something like that) message.

If you are able to use software to get at data, it must be working physically, the problem may be a corruption rather than a physical fault, in which case a format may fix it - try again, and post exactly what happens

Please, take no offence, BUT when offering advice please make sure you are technically minded here or know a lot about the topic.

No WAY, No HOW is a 3.5" style hard drive going to fit in a 2.5" Laptop.

erm, thought the link i posted was available sorry. typical pc world though, advertising items at prices when they havent got them in stock, and when they do get them in stock you watch the price change.

As for sonstreams post the hard drive is good, i got one, but as CoolHotCold said NO WAY, NO HOW is a pc harddrive going to fit into a laptop. as an external put into a enclosure it would be fine. I like samsung drives i got 3 of them, 1tb 1.5tb and a 2tb all work perfectly, quietly and cool. The only drive i've had a problem with is the Western Digital 1.5tb drive i bought which ended up having to be replaced. and yes i know that makes it look like i got 6tb worth of space. I stopped burning DVD's when they shot up in price to £18.00 for 100, cheaper to buy HDD's take up less room, and reusable.

OK,I tried to access it using an USB caddy but all it did was to make my Windows Explorer go 'Non Responsive,so I bunged it back into the laptop & ran a diagnostic on the disc,I got 'error 0146' which, according to Google search, say's the HD's bolluxed.
I can get a 300Gb one from the local PC shop & he's gonna see about bunging Win7 on it for me.
Thanks again for all the help.
