Hiring a shopmobility scooter for the first time!!

Options
I guess I am going through a crisis of pride, dignity self esteem and such but my legs aren't working so good as they were this time last year. So apart from stick advice, on my post just made, I need help with this new factor.

What is it like the first time and how soon do you get over the various emotions that seem to flood through my head. I don't want to 'cut my nose off to spite my face' by never getting around because of stubborn male pride as I really would like to venture further than the car park - plus a very short distance.

Also is there any links to the highway code or similar for how to drive these vehicles?

I am so like yourself, never used one but really think it would help us when out, prides a sod isn't it!
  • Can't say for certain about shopmobility, but I do know one of my friends who has MS thought she'd never be able to do anything until she was given a tatty little scooter thingy when a neighbour's Mum died. Five minutes of getting the hang of it (she has never driven) and her life was transformed.

She now goes out whenever she can, gets her own shopping, visits friends, takes as long as she wants out, rather than be restricted to a limited and extremely unreliable bus service (starts at 10, but usually 30 minutes late, stops at 3 but often doesn't come back after the 1.55pm bus) and can actually shop rather than glance in a window, then have to sit down for ten minutes each time or put things back because there's a queue she couldn't manage to stand and wait in.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Apart from the emotions, check what identification you need to take in order to hire a scooter. At our local Shopmobility, you have to show at least two forms of identity with your photo on them.

  • You may have to pay a joining fee and then pay a deposit each time you hire one. Cost vary between £5 and £10 for joining fee (annual) and £2 to £20 for hiring.
