Sourcing a new company car for a colleague

Hi,

I am helping out the plant manager by sourcing a company car for a new employee and was looking for some advice to make sure that I am going about it in the most cost effective way.

I have the spec of the car that I am interested in and am looking for ideally an ex-demonstrator or very low mileage model. If I can't find that then I'll settle for a brand new one. I want to buy rather than lease etc.

My starting point was to look at the manufacturers website to get an idea of the OTR price, just out of interest. I then went to the whatcar.com site to see what their target price is. I then had a look at autotrader to see what was on there. I also had a look at the local manufacturer's dealer website to see how much it was on there for a new one.

I guess I could start googling and no doubt come up with loads of options from all over the country. The final option is going to the local dealer and having a haggle with them.



I don't want to post the specifics of that I am looking for as I am just after some general advice, but I guess my question is, how would other people go about sourcing a new car?

    You are doing what I would say is pretty much the right thing to do. If the car is a year or so old then (marque dependent) the best place to buy is more than likely a main dealer. I would go in and have a chat with them to see what they have available - they can check the group stock to see if something suitable can be brought to that particular dealer for you on the premise of a sale. Be sure to state the sale is to a company so you deal with the correct individual.

    I assume the car will be paid in cash by your company, with the individual then given a fuel card? Just be careful r.e tax as you can end up with the company as well as the individual being stung.
