Hi there - bought a flatscreen TV from a friend of a friend - looks great but once home and plugged in it makes a really loud 'hissing' noise the whole time....
Naturally I'm going to ask them for the money back but just puzzled as to what this could be and wanted to check it's not something to do with the way I've rigged it up ie Sky & DVD player all linked up.
As a totally non teccy person sounds like some kind of compressor has gone but don't even know if TV's have these?
Seems a bit odd that this person would have sold me a duff TV as I do know them fairly well so just wanted to check if there's anything I can check/test etc before I stomp round for a refund...
thanks v much!

TVs don't have compressors. Its nothing to do with the way you've hooked anything up. It could be damp drying out but it should've subsided after a couple of hours use.

Does the TV make the same hissing noise when headphones are plugged into it?
Does the TV still make the same hissing noise when mute is pressed?
Is the hissing noise sound lije it is coming from the top middle or bottom of the unit?

Not too familiar with plasma TVs, is this one, maybe its ionisation from the high voltage circuits, due to damp as previously suggested.
Have a sniff, see if you can smell the ozone!!
If its an LCD maybe the driver for the backlight is noisy.
This assumes the noise is not coming through the speakers. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Did the friend also keep snakes? Maybe one has snuck inside :rotfl:0

It's always possible that it is an Intelligent TV™, which is expressing an opinion on the quality of current TV programming?0

Do you know if it is LCD or plasma (plasma generally have reflective glassy screens). If it is a plasma, then they do hum when they are on, generally can't hear it over the sound when the sound is playing though, only heard when tv on with no reception. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0
