If you have a local McDs near you they will give you strong boxes for free.

Try your local freecycle or gumtree. When we moved we got about 30-40 boxes without having to spend anything!0

A local greengrocer has a neverending supply they are trying to get rid of.0

It is so much easier with proper moving boxes that will stack well and are not too big. If you can't get some from Freecycle look in Yellow Pages for packaging companies and phone around for prices.0

Argos do decent box packages at reasonable prices (compared to storage companies, which I have found expensive)0

Banana boxes are half the size, but they are still sizeable, stack, have lids, and have handles - they are also made of the same grade of cardboard.
Many apple boxes now have lids too - and books and cd's go great into the ones with no lids and they all stack on top of each other - they also have a neverending supply of plastic trays which stack on top of each other (no lids though).
*Can you tell where I got my boxes from?)0 -
I bought Argos boxes and they're pretty good if you don't overfill the large ones. The medium are easier to fill, lift & stack!0

Document storage boxes from any stationery store, WH Smith or the like, Ryman, etc, or from your local cash & carry.
Advantages - they fold flat, so once you're moved, you can fold them away ready for the next move. They're strong, because they're designed to carry lots of heavy paperwork, files, etc. They come with lids, so will stack easily. They usually have carrying handles built in.
Disadvantages - none apart from having to pay for them, but it's worth it to protect, your stuff, surely?0 -
Got ours from my GFs friend's dad's work. Had to reinforce them a bit with some heavy duty tape, but they were free0
