Piggybanking - matching salary to payments

I just read the article on piggybanking which seems like it will work very well for me.
However, right now, I get my salary in on the last day of every month, then we get varied payments during the month for my wifes disability and incapacity.
Most of the bills get paid on the 1st of the month.
I am just wondering if anyone else uses piggybanking and if so, do you spread your direct debits for utility bills, mortgage etc through the month or have them pretty much follow wages? I think it would probably be better to move the DD's/SO's etc to a little later (say the 5th of every month) to ensure there is a gap.
Anyone do it and how much gap do you leave between wages and payments?
