When I connect my Windows 7 Dell XPS laptop via HDMI to an HDTV, I can not get both the laptop screen and the HDTV screen to display at the same time. I have gone into graphics properties to change settings but this has not helped. The windows Help screen gave this message:-
After connecting my computer to an HDTV, why can't I see certain windows on my computer monitor anymore?
This is normal. Certain kinds of computer information, such as games and video, will only appear on the HDTV. You will see a blank screen or a blank window on the computer monitor. To see this information on the computer monitor, you must temporarily disconnect the HDTV.

My previous Windows 7 machine could display both on the monitor and tv screen. Any thoughts?

What does display? Is it that you haven't set the tv to display the lead input? On mine I have to select that hdmi socket and zoom in to get the same picture.0

You can usually alternate the display using the Fn key (bottom left on laptop) along with one of the F keys. It various from laptop to laptop.
My old lappy you pressed Fn+F12 to change the various video outputs. Have a look at your manual or Google your particular make of laptop (e.g "Dell Fn keys" or whatever make your laptop is.)0
