Switching gas & elec supplier

I went to the comparison site for gas and electricity suppliers and entered details of my annual consumption of each. I could save over £275 with several suppliers one of which was the one I was already with, Scottish Power! There seems to be no change in the name of the tariff so how come I can save money with my existing supplier when all gas and electric prices are increasing? Is it really so easy as cancelling the existing supplier and re-applying to the same?

No, you have made a mistake.
You cannot save money that way. Input your annual consumption in kWh and you will get a accurate output.
Comparison sites will explain how they have calculated the actual cost of each tariff offered (including your existing one) so check there too.
If you are still confused, give us all the details and someone will hopefully take a look for you and explain things."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Hi, I am in a rented house on standard tariff with Scottish Power, can anyone advise me of the likely cancellation fees I could incur, and whether I can then take my new supplier to my next address?
Thanks0 -
Standard tariffs have no early exit fees. At the new address you should register with the existing supplier ... then you can switch supplier if you want"Now to trolling as a concept. .... They will not allow you to enter your usage without telling then who you are with now.
Why?I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -

Why?
The clue is in the name "Comparison site"
In order to do a comparison, they need something to compare with, you could make it up if you're paranoid but what would be the point of that?Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -

It is all so confusing that no mere mortal could possibly understand it. Are you comparing like with like? There is 5% VAT, discounts for paying online, etc.
In view of the expected increase in electricity prices you might want to consider signing up for a fixed price deal if one is still available. I did that yesterday (via Money Supermarket) and even though we are "all electric" and currently have the best deal available to us, it will cost us less than £1 per month extra for the fixed deal with EDF. It has to be worth a gamble!0 -

All I want is the cheapest.
All they want is for me to change suppliers.
Not necessarily the same thing.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
Then make it up, as long as you put your correct usage in they will tell you who is cheapest, just ignore the savings if you make it up..

....
Then put in any supplier/tariff, and possibly get a result like the OP got suggesting they could save £275 by switching to the supplier & tariff they are already on "Now to trolling as a concept. .... Remember you may be over paying your current supplier which is why they appear cheaper on a comparison site (or you may just be on the wrong tariff)Truth always poses doubts & questions.
