Joint cheque in single name bank account?

Can this be done. We were married on saturday and have recieved quite a few cheques in joint names. We keep our accounts seperate and providing ID to put my partner on my account seems a bit unfair as this is how we happily conduct our finances. Also apart from the marriage certificate providing ID will prove difficult at present.
Any advice please?

I'm sure it can be done, contact your bank and ask them what their procedure is.0

Cheque paid to X can only be paid in to an account in the name of X
X might be a single person or a company or in your case two/joint names.
Bank are getting very fussy now, even typos on say a second initial will mean the cheque is rejected for paying into to a persons account.
So I'd guess the only way is to open a separate joint account with one of your banks and only use it for paying in cheques written to you both.....0 -
No it can't be done. The vast majority of cheques are crossed account payee only which in this case, means the cheques will have to be paid into a joint account.0

Either open a joint account or ask for the cheques to be re-done in just one name.
Of course if paid in it may 'slip throught the net' but I wouldn't count on it.0 -
Best advice is to open a joint account, keep a nominal amount in there, there will be times in your future when you may get cheques in joint names eg. refunds from companies, insurance claims, families, mortgage completions. It makes like so much easier for you to cash them rather than sending them back and asking to be made to a sole person.
You can't pay a joint cheque into a sole account if the cheque is crossed account payee, which to be honest is the majority of cheques these days.0 -
A basic bank account should be easy to open even with limited id
and you should have told people about this in advance so they could have wrote single cheques0 -
I used my marriage certificate to change my name at my bank. I already had a joint account open so didn't have to try to open an account with it.0

The bank should not accept it due to an increase in cheque fraud.
I would open a joint account to be on the safe side and use that to clear the cheques.
Make it a joint savings accounts if you don't want to linked on your credit files.0 -

Congratulations for last Saturday.
Open a joint account. Very easy to do. The marriage certificate will be all you need for ID (in addition to the usual gas bills and driving licences). It is then up to you both as to how much money you keep in joint funds, and what you do with that money.
Best wishes
