Good builder(s) in the Manchester/Cheshire/North West area

We've bought our first house and need to find a good builder for some smaller jobs around the house (removing and replacing fireplaces, replacing doors, that sort of thing). I've tried to find someone but am really struggling to know who is decent. Barely any of our friends in the area own houses so we don't have any personal recommendations. Tried searching My Builder but have been put off by some of the threads here about how unreliable it is. Called around a few people from the Yellow Pages but haven't been impressed by them (don't return phone calls/emails, sound disinterested etc).

Is there anyone local out there with recommendations? :)

ETA: any recommendations for good bathroom fitters, central heating fitters and carpet fitters also gratefully received!
