There REALLY is one, honest :)

Your drianage channels will be in a slight v to the centre, usually, and in the back wall right in the bottom of that will be a hole.

Q-itps, drinking straws or pipe cleaners are all means of getting it clear of gunk.

A turkey baster can come in quite handy for this too.

    Ma'am,

I can confirm that Operation "CLEAN-dat-fridge" is now over.

the battle to clear out The Gunk was hard fought and disgusting, but thanks to the heroism of private keth who got her fingers dirty (despite going green several times) ... the gunk was cleaned out. Copious amounts of soapy water, stardrops, vinegar and microfibre cloths later, private keth and Captain BP pulled out the (now clean) fridge and discovered, to their horror.. the fabled drainage hole legend was true - The Gunk had a secret hideaway!!!

they cleaned behind the fridge (where some scurrying creatures had eaten away at the wall) and mopped the floor, then investigated the secret hideaway: drip tray was empty but disgusting cardboard was resting ontop, and this turned out to be the source of The Gunk.

Said Gunk is now resting in a body bag (aka black plastic bag) ready to go with the arresting officers (aka the dustbinmen) tomorrow, and we can proudly declare Operation CLEAN-dat-fridge a success!!

Please chew out Corporal Hudson for daring to suggest that we'd be better off "taking off and nuking the site from orbit, tis the only way to be sure".

private keth aka the victor.. signing off.

    *salutes*

    Hmm....

That'll do for a first attempt - but I'll expect better next time.

You've not done bad - but you'd do better not to use smelly cleaners, or at least VERY mild solutions if you have to.

    YOU! THAT MAN THERE!!

Stop fidgeting and go and fill an empty yoghurt pot with bicarbonate of soda and sit it at the back of a shelf to absorb the pong of this DISGUSTING cleaner!

    OK...

I'm a student so that should explain my naiveness... I'm midway through cleaning my fridge, I've turned it off and washing it all down with soapy water and some kind of kitchen spray with a picture of a fridge inside on the back :) I'm wiping it dry with towels but with wires, light bulbs etc. in there I'm a bit scared they'll get together and blow up. Should I leave it a few hours before turning it back on? (I'd rather not as I want to get my food back in there! But that would be better than blowing up the kitchen and dying)

So to cut to the chase, do I turn my fridge straight back on when I've finished cleaning it or not?

Also any tips on making it more fragrant would be appreciated...

Wipe it dry as far as possible, and then it should be fine to turn back on. Fridges are not naturally 'dry' anyway. Just make sure it's not absolutely soaking!

To keep it smelling fresh, buy a tub of bicarbonate of soda (about 40p from the supermarket) take the lid off and stick it at the back of the fridge. Replace it every couple of months. It will absorb any smells and is far cheaper than the fridge depdorisers that you see.

I use a steam cleaner to clean my fridge and defrost my freezer. In the past I've used a hairdryer - and I'm still alive :D

The tip about the bicarb is great too - I don't even use a full tub - a couple of tablespoons in a small dish is ample.

Always makes me think of the simpsons with homer eating spoonfuls of years old baking soda as its the last 'snack' in the fridge...

  • Just dont try to wash down the coils on the back! Vacuum. The fridge insides should be pretty waterproof so you needn't worry. In most models any water falls down into a drip tray which should be removed for cleaning (with tongs if necessary).
