we have had the same dicussuion, in the end we have booked early for a cruise next May. I would suggest that if the ship and itinery is what your after and are stuck to certain dates then book ahead.have cruise both Thomsan and Royal Caribbean and loved them both for different reasons and would book Thomsons again if the price was right although they have come up dearer than P&O for our next cruise.

If it was my first cruise I would be looking into the 'type' of cruiseline... i.e does the O.P want to be wearing a dinner suit in the evening or jeans ?

Imagine getting onboard with jeans and shorts and finding its dinner suits and evening gowns

some say earlier the better, in my opinion the later the better for piece of mind if you have the cruise you are after and the price is right now then book now.
If you want a particular cruise to a particular place at a particular time - book now !
If you can go at "the drop of a hat" you will get a bargain, but the choice will be limited.
(My local Travel Agent has 14 nights on Queen Elizabeth, round the Baltic, for £799 - dep Jul 1. Same cruise and cabin next year is - "from" £1879 !!!!)

Cant advice on fly cruises, did one hated it!

Apart from the usual "aggro" of airports, the big drawback is that you are limited by the amount of baggage that the airline allows you. Cruises from the UK allow unlimited baggage - IF you can get it to the ship !
