Which makes it harder to decide what to do if they all have different opinions.
Copied from The Co-operative website:
Q: How long does my No Claim Discount last for if I don’t use it on an active policy?
A: Up to 3 years if your No Claim Discount is with The Co-operative Insurance, and up to one year if your No Claim Discount is with another insurer.0 -
One year is very mean. Suppose someone gets banned for a year for driving offences but is not involved in a crash. They may lose all their no claims as by the time the new licence is received they'd probably be a few days over the 1 year time limit.0

I'm assuming it's because they have the proof?
So do you if you ask them to confirm your NCD in writing at the end of the policy. I would always do that when leaving an insurance company. Often when I've changed to a new insurance company, they've asked me for proof of NCD and I've got that by asking for it from the previous company. Actually, on occasion, the old company has sent me the proof before I've even asked for it. I believe (but I may be wrong) that they are obliged to send it to you.0 -

I wonder losing all your NCD might pale into insignificance compared to the hike in premium you get for having a 12 month ban...0 -

... so in other words it's down to the policy of the company issuing the new insurance policy... who might have a more generous view if you were with them before.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

Well paying 100% of the new hiked premium is one thing, far nicer if you got 60% off the hiked price using your max no claims, which you could do with some companies but not the 1yr ones.0 -
I always thought it was 2 years with most, 3 with a few. Surely its up to the new insurance company, not the old, once you have the bit of paper saying you have x years NCB from y date.0

Thanks all.
Will see what the garage say tomorrow before making any decissions.
But it's good to know that the consensus is we've got at least a year.0
