Cancellation fees - anyone ever escape without one?
Just looking at changing gas/electricity providers but I have to wait until September as that's when our British Gas fix ends. Spoke to someone at BG today to ask when they don't charge a fee, looking at their wording it states,
"If you cancel the agreement, either by moving to another gas or electricity supplier or requesting to change your gas and/or electricity to another of our tariff(s) at any time prior to 30th September 2011 we may apply a cancellation charge (inclusive of any VAT that may be applicable). The cancellation charges are £30 for electricity and £70 for gas. This charge will not be applied if the agreement is cancelled due to a home move"
so I asked if you "may apply" the charge, when don't you apply it? The answer was that they don't charge if you move. I pointed out that house moves were stated separately, so again when is it not charged, and his answer was "never, we always charge it". I asked why the wording did not say, "we will charge" but he had no answer to that.
So, anyone ever got an energy company do drop the cancellation fee?
