The transaction wont go through if there is more than one signal.

I really hope so. For a while I had my new Barclaycard contactless next to my Oyster card in my wallet. On boarding buses the machine did a double beep and reported an error, but the correct money was deducted from Oyster.

When accidentally using my Hong Kong "Octopus" card (similar to Oyster) at a London Underground station, correctly it didn't open the barrier but it gave a bizarre error on the little LCD display. (Something like "staff pass not valid here".)

My only concern is when I have more than one contactless card in my wallet, how does the machine know which one I want to pay with!!!!
One solution would be to take out the card you want to use and swipe it over the machine. Tricky, I know.

Someone was telling me about an episode of NCIS where they showed people walking along the street stealing money from passersby using a portable scanner. Sounded a bit worrying .......

There have been a number of concerns raised about the security of contactless cards. I personally do not know enough about this type of technology to say whether or not people's fears are founded. If your credit card is cloned and used fraudulently it is far less inconvenient than having your debit card cloned.

Most people have their wages paid into a current account and subsequently pay their direct debits and standing orders from there. If your debit card is used fraudulently and the account is cleared out then your bills may not be paid and you have a real headache. I know of someone who had his debit card cloned and his wages cleared out, it took him six weeks to get the money back.

Personally I NEVER use my debit card for in shops or on line and am constantly telling my family to do the same. If your credit card is cloned it is the bank's money at stake and they can take as long as they like to sort it out. Normally they issue you with a new card straight away.

Yep I never use a debit card in shops etc. The knock-on effects of fraud can be significant - it is so much easier with CCs.

Rather like the so-called "direct debit guarantee", whatever the ultimate legal liabilities, YOU are the guy that has to do all the chasing.

    Hi.

I've just been given a replacement credit card and it has the contactless feature which I think is sheer madness.

I've asked my CC company how to disable it but they say there's no way this can be done.

Any advice on how to proceed, apart from changing CC company? (How does the contactless feature work anyway - is there a little chip somewhere on the card?)

    THanks.

I recently received a replacement card that is a contactless card. I simply phoned the bank, told them I don't want it and they replaced it with a standard card. They didn't even ask why.

But have the banks thought of any of this?

    No.

Of course they have - they don't think it's worth the investment. It's a trade off between costs

'Real' security would make cards unusable.

How right you are. There would be so much chasing.
