Pedestrians have every right to be in the road, in fact arguably more right than vehicles as they don't need a licence to use the road (neither do cyclists or horse riders). Whether it's a sensible thing to do is another matter, but a driver must always give way to a pedestrian. There's no such concept of jay-walking here.
Maybe but drivers should not be driving up or parking on pavements, which is a common problem0 -

If you lived there you would understand what the OP is on about. June to August the roads are jam packed with slow holidaymaker drivers in "holiday mode", who dont know where they are going, and are in no hurry to get there and divers who are not used to roads any narrower than the M5, and who slam the breaks on if another car is approaching on an A road,a dn spend more time looking at the scenery than where they are going.
This is fine if you are also on holiday and in no hurry, but if you are trying to go about your normal life and need to be somewhere in a reasonable timescale it is infuriating.0 -
A Cornish rant. Why on a money saving forum? Because its costing me a small fortune in fuel getting stuck behind them. So I thought I would post a few hints and tips for the above groups.
Tractors - When chugging along at 15mph on a busy A road in the rush hour, there are things called LAY-BYs where you can pull in from time to time to let all the angry people trying to get to work behind you past.
Cyclists - When enjoying your Sunday afternoon bike ride is it really necessary to block up the whole carriageway just so you can have a nice chit chat? Have you not seen the massive queue of traffic behind you?
Emmets -
1. The National speed limit is 60mph not 20.
2. You do not need to stop on an A road when another vehicle comes the other way.
3. Mirror Signal Manoeuver as opposed to pass the turn, slam on the brakes and reverse.
4. Doing a three point turn on a blind corner of a busy A road is a bad idea.
5. Pavements are for pedestrians, roads for cars not vice versa.
6. Walking out in front of a moving vehicle is a bad idea.
7. When walking down a road without a pavement it is common etiquette to move to the side of the road when a vehicle wants to pass.
8. Do you really need the massive motor home? Here's a money saving tip, pass on the 50k vehicle and massive fuel bills and campsite fees and book into a B&B instead. You don't even have to empty the toilet.
9. If you do decide to drive said motor home try checking the map or even use a satnav before getting stuck down a narrow dead end.
Thank you
Tell you what, why don't all us "Emmets" just not bother coming to Cornwall. I wonder just how long the local economy will last?
In fact, if you hate it so much why don't go live in those new-fangled towns and cities. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

Not saying don't come down, just use a bit of common sense when you get here.0 -

Nah....I won't bother now that I know I am considered to be unwelcome. We would normally go to Treknow and Tintagel, but seeing as we are referred to "Emmets" and are being made to feel we are not wanted, I think we will got to Watchet, Somerset instead. We have never been made to feel uncomfortable there. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

I'm reading a book at the moment that's set in Cornwall in the late 19th century. There actually is a distinction between Cornwall and England. They refer to Cornwall as the Duchy and those that aren't born and bred there as 'the English' and talk about travelling to England. Looks like that distinction still persists...

If at first you don't succeed, maybe bomb disposal isn't the best career choice.0
