Talk Talk complaint (and I'm not even a customer!)

I called Talk Talk in November 2010 in relation to an old ADSL line in my property and I just wanted to know whether or not it was still connected at the exchange and to get general pricing information. I was advised my Talk Talk that in order to check the line status they'd need some information from me, which I provided and it turned out the line wasn't still connected and Talk Talk's prices weren't very competitive.

I have recently had reason to check my credit files and Talk Talk carried out two credit searches on the day I called for the general information about their pricing. At the time I cantacted many companies for general information and none of the others needed to carry out these searches. I've contacted Talk Talk and they've said they were wrong to do the searches as I wasn't applying for credit but that they are unable to remove the searches, as they don't have anything in place for this type of situation.

I've spoken to the Information Commissioner's Office and they have advised that Talk Talk are in the wrong and that it is a very simple process that just requires Talk Talk to write the Equifax and have the erroneous data removed. I've passed all the information given by the ICO and a formal complaint to Talk Talk's head of complaints at the CEO's office but they're just reiterating that they're sorry for the inconvenience but they don't have a process in place to be able to help me. The ICO says it's a simple letter to Equifax that's needed. How can they not have a process in place?

Anyone any advise on how to deal with this further?
If it wasn't for the mistakes I made in the past (and learned from), I wouldn't be who and where I am today. It doesn't matter if you've cocked up, what matters is that you put it right and apologise. x
