I've been a fan of Aldi for a long time (Lidl is also good). I don't eat meat but my family does and they say that the meat is good from both shops. In this country we consider Aldi & Lidl to be cheap shops and their own brands to be inferior to our brands, but in their countries Aldi & Lidl are apparently the equivalent of M&S or Waitrose. From Aldi we often get a joint of ham for about £3.49 which we then slice up and use for sandwiches and in pasta/rice etc. We also get the frozen beef mince there, 1kg of Angus mince, think it is £1.99 and it isn't too fatty. They do some lovely frozen fish at a good price. I would say we do the bulk of our shopping there now, just top up at Tesco for things we can't get from Aldi. From the top of my head these are the things that are good:
    Unsalted butter
    Margarine
    Milk - 99p 4 pints
    coleslaw
    tinned tomatoes
    kidney beans
    some tinned fruit
cereal - especially the muesli in the red box
biscuits, chocolate, sweets & cakes - most are good
bread - they do Braces bread at 99p, but their own sandwich loaf is good at 69p
    eggs at 89p
    Flour
    sugar
cleaning products & bin bags etc
    washing powder
    ladies sanitary ware
    crisps & pop
    fruit & veg

The fruit & veg has always been very good and usually much cheaper than most supermarkets. However I have noticed just recently that some of it has been going off very quickly. I have taken a few things back just lately that have gone off within a day or 2 of me buying them & last week I noticed strawberries that were sat in the store that were all moldy. Whether it is down to the recent warm whether I don't know, as never had a problem before. Be interested to see if anyone else has had a problem with anything. Last week I had problems with the carrots and the mangoes.

Specially selected curry sauces - with the dry powder seperate from sauce are lovely £1.10ish

Oh I forgot about these - they are lovely!

Also their tortilla wraps are huge and much cheaper than elsewhere.

Mini Brie are great at 99p to stick in the oven and have with the part baked rolls

I would love to start using Aldi regularly but it puts me totally off just how quick they expect you to move through the checkouts plus I wish they would accept cc payments.

Their checkout system is actually something that I like about Aldi and in the main it works. You occasionally get some dithering old dear that takes for ever, but the rest of the time it is fine, and I have to say that if a queue does build up they are usually pretty good at opening other tills.

The credit card thing, I still sometimes get caught out, if I'm purchasing an electrical item for example or a large £ unexpectedly I automatically go to put it on my credit card. Lidl is the same with not taking credit cards.

One thing I do like about Aldi is their 3 year guarantee on electrical items , we bought a tv from them, 18 months in and it developed a fault. I thought they would try to say oh it's not covered under the guarantee or something, but they collected it and returned it repaired in less than a week. They said to us that if they had of had any of the same size in stock at the time, instead of repairing it they would have just given us a new one.

The Aldi Frozen Chicken Breasts at 1.1kg for £3.99 are great value and they dont shrink like the Tesco "Market" Value ones (1Kg for £3.99 last time I checked) - Aldi's Fresh Chicken is great quality in fact after being a snob for years I have finally learned the error of my ways, Aldi stuff ID great quality and soooo much more affordable.

I'm another one for their frozen chicken breast blue or tan packet. Their fresh steak beef mince is very good quality, better than Tesco. cold meats are vey good. They also have 99p frozen pizza which is good to have when needed. Bao is good too.
You cannot beat alid for frozen chicken breast and fesh steak mince.

i feed a family of 7, have brocolli offcuts for my lovebirds and chicken scraps for the cats .
bargain meal! if i went to sainsburys it would be about £12

  • Don't want to repeat everyone else as they've said that the chicken, meats in general etc are nice. We love a LOT of what they sell, used to be Sainsburys exclusively but now I just go there afterwards to get what I couldn't in Aldi! It's probably halved my shopping bill.

Agreeing with all comments on quality of meat in Lidl & Aldi. I have been doing the bulk of our shopping there for a while now and the quality on fresh produce is far better than Tesco etc.
